Central Baptist Theological Seminary recently announced that as a part of its new Institute of Sacred Arts, two recital series will be held in the Baugh-Marshall Chapel this fall.

Central Baptist Theological Seminary recently announced that as a part of its new Institute of Sacred Arts, two recital series will be held in the Baugh-Marshall Chapel this fall. A classical series will be held on the first Sundays of the month beginning in September, and a jazz series will be held on the third Sundays of the month beginning in August.

Dr. Rebecca Johnson, as the new Director of Sacred Arts and Chapel Musician, is coordinating the series and has lined up some great local acts to perform in the new state-of-the-art venue.  Attendance is free.

Classical Recital Series – First Sundays – 3:00 p.m.
September 4 at 7:00 p.m. Great Hymns of Faith
Please note the different time

Local opera favorites, Ben Gulley and Nathan Granner, will team up to present an afternoon of lecture and music on the great hymns of faith.

October 2 at 3:00 p.m. Songs of Brazil
UMKC Conservatory of Music brings the music of Brazilian composer M. Camargo Guarnieri to life in songs sung by Dr. Rebecca Sherburne and lecture by Dr. Sarah Tyrrell

November 6 at 3:00 p.m. American Gratitude
Vox Luminis and Dr. Sarah Tyrrell will present a lecture/recital of choral pieces written by American composers that explore the complexities and greatness of life in America.


Jazz Recital Series – Third Sundays – 3:00 p.m.
August 21 at 3:00 - Wild Women of Song

Four different women with four different gifts. Different styles, one common heritage; yet four different cultural experiences. Together, whatever genre they perform, the listener experiences one spirit, one voice, and one heart.

September 18th at 3:00 - Smith Athon Trio
The Smith Athon trio brings great jazz to life in Kansas City. Local players who play in national venues, the trio promises an afternoon of swinging sounds!

October 16 at 3:00 p.m. - Dr. Pagan and Millie Edwards
An afternoon with Millie Edwards and Dr. Michael Pagan will be the interplay between the instruments of two masters. Listeners will enjoy stylistic deliveries from a musical cornucopia.

November 20 at 3:00 p.m. - Kansas City Youth Jazz
Kansas City Youth Jazz is a non-profit community education program for youth in grades five through twelve in metropolitan Kansas City. Music students on both sides of the state line come together on the campus of MCC-Penn Valley to study from some of our area's finest jazz musicians who are also experienced music educators.

The Baugh-Marshall Chapel is located on the seminary campus at 6601 Monticello Road, Shawnee, KS (the corner of Monticello and Shawnee Mission Pkwy about 4 miles west of the western loop of I-435)
