Musica Aestas 2011 summer season announced
The UMKC Community Music and Dance Academy will be offering six free concerts June 17–23. Artists include Diverse, Daniel Saenz, Brendan Kinsella, Quadrivium, newEar, and Matthew Burtner.
Musica Aestas (or "summer music") is the Community Music and Dance Academy's summer concert series. All concerts are free and open to the public, but also correspond with activites planned for UMKC Summer Composition Workshop, UMKC Cello Days, and Wind Band Teaching Symposium. We welcome program participants, students, faculty, and community members to come hear great music!
Music Aestas 2011 will feature a variety of musial styles, including jazz, classical, and contemporary. All performances take place on the UMKC campus.
June 17, White Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. Brendan Kinsella
Pianist Brendan Kinsella performs works by Frederic Rzewski, including Study I, De Profundis, and selections from The Road and North American Ballads. Dr. Kinsella is a UMKC Conservatory alum, currently teaching piano at the University of Texas Pan-American.
June 19, Grant Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. Diverse
Diverse (Hermon Mehari, trumpet; Ryan Lee, drums; Ben Leifer, bass; Tony Tixier, piano) performs original compositions and jazz standards. Diverse consists of UMKC Conservatory students and alumni. Mentored by the great Bobby Watson, Diverse possesses a fearless approach to creating and performing.
June 20, White Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. Daniel Saenz
Cellist Daniel Saenz performs Romantic and modern works by Schumann, Franck, Herington, Ginastera, and Pann. Saenz, a UMKC Cello Days faculty member, teaches cello at Sam Houston State University.
June 21, White Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. Quadrivium
Quadrivium (Jonathan Borja, flute; Cheryl Melfi, clarinet; Sascha Groschang, cello; Kari Johnson, piano; Christopher Biggs, electronics) performs new music by composers Ryan Oldham,Christopher Biggs, Yuan Peiying, Joao Pedro Oliveira, and Chaipruck Mekara.
June 23, Grant Recital Hall, 12:00 p.m. Daniel Saenz and Matthew Burtner
Cellist Daniel Saenz performs works by Composition Workshop faculty members Matthew Burtnerand Mara Gibson.
June 23, White Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. newEar
newEar performs contemporary works by Composition Workshop faculty members. Composers include James Mobberley, Mara Gibson, Matthew Burtner, Ingrid Stolzel, William Lackey, andNarong Prangcharoen.
