2011 Jewell Early Music Summer Festival and Workshop
Four concerts and a plethora of workshops are sure to engage those early music enthusiasts as the 2011 Jewell Early Music Summer Festival begins July 26th.
The Kansas City Baroque Consortium is pleased to announce the third annual Jewell Early Music Summer Festival and Workshop.
* A four concert summer series of period performances featuring early music from across the European continent.
* A 5-day workshop exploring the art of period performance for vocalists and instrumentalists hosted by William Jewell College.
* Baroque Outside the Box! A series of illuminating discussions and informal performances for the interested observer and the ingenious learner.
Members of the Kansas City Baroque Consortium directed by Trilla Ray-Carter, will be joined by St. Louis Baroque members Jeffrey Noonan, lute and theorbo; Charles Metz, harpsichord; and William Bauer, violin along with vocalists Jay Carter, countertenor, Sarah Tannehill Anderson, soprano, Anthony Maglione, tenor and others for a richly varied series of historically informed performances.

JEMS Fest for Joplin, a benefit for the Joplin Schools Music Program
The Jewell Early Music Summer Festival will kickoff its third annual summer concert series with a "JEMS Fest for Joplin" concert benefitting the Joplin Schools Tornado Relief Fund at Renee Kelley's at Caenen Castle. This historic renaissance castle-style home built in 1907 and refurbished in 2004 as a private event venue will serve as a beautiful backdrop for an evening of German and Austrian Baroque music performed on period instruments featuring members of the Kansas City Baroque Consortium, St. Louis Baroque, and vocalists, Sarah Tannehill Anderson, soprano, Jay Carter, countertenor, and Tony Maglione, tenor. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the music programs for the Joplin Schools destroyed in the May 22 tornado. Limited seating, reservations required. A program of French Baroque works features harpsichordist, Charles Metz of St. Louis Baroque performing on his 1981 Walter Burr copy of the Benoit Stehlin Harpsichord (1760) at the Smithsonian Museum. He will be joined by Jeff Noonan on lute and theorbo, Trilla Ray-Carter, baroque cello, Jay Carter, countertenor, Sarah Tannehill Anderson, soprano and members of the Kansas City Baroque Consortium.

The English Renaissance

The third concert of the 2011 summer series will feature the JEMS Fest Singers in a concert of a cappella choral works by the English Rennaissance composer William Byrd. Vocalists include: Sarah Tannehill Anderson, Amy Waldron, Jay Carter, Melissa Carter, Tony Maglione, Eddie Straub, Evan Courtney, Doug Maag.
The Jewell Early Music Workshop
August 1-5, William Jewell College
The Jewell Early Music Workshop for vocal, choral and instrumental performance explores historically informed performance practice of the Baroque period. Hosted by William Jewell College, participation is open to advanced high school and college musicians, accomplished amateurs, and instructors. Participation fees are $125-$250 for the week. Interested observers may attend morning or afternoon sessions for $10 which includes the daily afternoon Seminar Series: "Baroque Outside the Box", exploring rhetoric, gesture, performance practice and research of early music.

General Admission $10 per day, payable at the door.
Topics include: "Rhetorically Singing", the language of early music, with Jay Carter, countertenor; "Why Corelli Counts" with Jeff Noonan, lute; and "Harmonia Artificiosa - Altered Tunings in the High Baroque" with Bill Bauer, violin.

Music of Handel, Wassenauer and Corelli will be presented on the 2011 summer series final concert featuring the JEMS Fest Workshop Chorale under the direction of Dr. Anthony Maglione in Handel's Ode to the Birthday of Queen Anne with members of the Kansas City Baroque Consortium and St. Louis Baroque. Soprano, Sarah Tannehill Anderson will be featured in Handel's recently discovered Gloria in Excelsis Deo, and countertenor, Jay Carter in Handel's Come la rondenilla from Tirsis.
