Lonely party for an EP release

By Nihan Yesil   Tue, Oct 11, 2011

Sir Threadius Mongus held strong as the band played for an intimate gathering on October's First Friday. Celebrating their newest EP, the former Tulsans join the ever-growing list of artists who now call Kansas City home.

Lonely party for an EP release

Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project presented Sir Threadius Mongus Threads EP Release Celebration on Friday, at la Esquina. The sextet faithfully performed to a room full of art work along with a handful of attendees, half of which was friends and family members. It is difficult to review an event in which the number of performers almost exceeded the number the audience.

Sir Threadius Mongus recently established its new home base in Kansas City. The group was previously a mainstay on the Tulsa music scene, including performances at Dfest, Ciao, OK Mozart, and the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. The group released Threads EP on the Artists’ Recording Collective, which includes three live tracks from December 16, 2010 at the R Bar, featuring Annie Ellicott, as well as new studio recordings that were composed specifically for the new ensemble.

The new lineup of Sir Threadius Mongus features Jeff Davis (guitar), Matt Otto (saxophones), Andrew McGhie (saxophone), Stanton Kessler (trumpet), Mike Stover (bass), and Jonathan Taylor (drums).

The music of the night was composed by Jeff Davis, and included open form for improvisation. The compositions were based on potentially interesting ideas, however the execution missed the mark; the voicing on the horns became repetitive in timbre and lost originality after the first few tracks.

Although the music failed to impress, the musicians' dedication was commendable. The group played a whole set with enthusiasm. Their attitude cleared out the air of playing to a scant audience, and made the few participants feel welcome.

The band's sincerity and onstage communication added greatly to the enjoyment of the music which otherwise wouldn't hold up. Thanks to the players of Sir Threadius Mongus for the respect they showed to their audience and making it worth their listeners’ time.
