KCMetropolis.org writers selected for NEA Arts Journalism Institute
Just announced - KCM classical music writer and reviewer Libby Hanssen is one of a handful of journalists from across the country selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to attend its seventh Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music and Opera.
Kansas City, MO (September 29, 2010) – KCMetropolis.org (KCM), Kansas City’s unique online journal for the performing arts, has just announced that classical music writer and reviewer Libby Hanssen is one of a handful of journalists from across the country selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to attend its seventh Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music and Opera. The Institute takes place October 9-19 at Columbia University in New York City, and is part of a series of NEA-funded annual programs that focus on improving arts criticism in classical music, opera, theater and dance.
KCM music and culture writer Megan Browne Helm was one of 26 attendees at last year’s Institute.
“We are just beginning our third year of publishing, so we are exceptionally proud that for the second consecutive year, one of our writers has been selected by the NEA to attend their prestigious learning immersion program,” said KCM co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Marcy Chiasson. “Coming so early in our publishing life makes this honor even more meaningful.”
Hanssen earned her Masters in Music from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and her Bachelors of Music from Ball State University, both in trombone performance, and studied music education at Indiana University, where she also taught classes in general music. In Kansas City, she has performed with the UMKC Conservatory Orchestra, Musica Nova, Kansas City Puccini Festival, The People's Liberation Big Band and New Jazz Order.
Helm studied voice at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and was a choral fellow at the Yale School of Music’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. She currently sings with the Kansas City Symphony Chorus under the direction of Charles Bruffy. In addition to KCMetropolis.org, Helm has also written for presentmagazine.com, Lawrence Journal World and Shawnee, Leawood Lifestyle and KC Parent magazines.
Detailed biographies of Hanssen and Helm can be found at KCMetropolis.org.
KCM’s mission is to help promote, make accessible and educate the general public about the area’s rich performing arts heritage by publishing substantive, critical, unbiased reviews, previews and articles. Because of the nature of online journalism, a growing number of readers across the country are discovering KCM.
Founders Chiasson and Nathan Granner created KCMetropolis.org in 2008 to help fill a critical need for performing arts coverage in metropolitan Kansas City. Its roster of 19 volunteer writers covers traditional and independent classical music, dance, theatre, jazz and independent film.
