KCMetropolis.org recently received a $10,000 grant from the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. The grant is to be used mainly to increase the website’s visibility and readership.

“We are honored to receive this grant from the Stern Foundation, one of our community’s foremost arts supporters. KCMetropolis has run on a shoe-string budget, and the dedication of our great volunteer writers for the past three years. And although our readership has doubled each year, funding has been slow to come in during these hard economic times—especially for such a new form of media,” says Marcy Chiasson, publisher and co-founder of the organization.

“KCM has been successfully cross promoting with other arts purveyors like the Downtown Council and the Arts Council, and also by media partnerships from many of our website sponsors: Harriman-Jewel Series, Bach Aria Soloists, Lied Center, the Performing Arts Series at JCCC, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Ballet, The Friends of Chamber Music, etc."

"But the thought of actually purchasing visibility has been out of our reach until now.”

This season KCMetropolis will have a presence in some of Kansas City’s main program books including the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Lyric Opera, Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Repertory Theatre and The Friends of Chamber Music, among others.

“The Stern grant gives us the opportunity to reach even more people in the community that are interested in, and support the arts. Audience members and potential readers will be thrilled to learn about such a rich resource for the performing arts with an archive that stretches back three years and offers over 2000 articles on our incredible performing arts scene. We currently have around 90 arts organization’s seasons on our KC Events calendar, making the 2011–12 performing arts season easily accessible to anyone online. And with a readership of 174,000 unique visitors last year alone, we anticipate reaching double that this year."

Chiasson says that she hopes KCMetropolis will someday have a big bill board on I-35 near the new Kauffman Center.  "That will really help get the word about the performing arts in Kansas City. Read all about it!"

KCM has also received support from the Francis Family Foundation, Bank of America, Missouri Arts Council, the ArtsKC Fund and private donations from readers and arts lovers.
