The Kansas City Symphony bade farewell to summer this past Saturday night, entertaining a full crowd of all ages at the Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission with favorites from the concert hall, theatre stage, and Hollywood.

The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City Board of Directors approved a total of $338,502 in grants from the ArtsKC Fund. The grants were distributed amongst seventy-seven arts organizations and arts programs in the Kansas City metropolitan area in the Ovation, Catalyst and Inspiration grant categories.

The Lawrence Arts Center has been named a Kansas Arts Education Leader by the Kansas Arts Commission. Organizations named Arts Education Leaders were awarded $10,000 matching grants in honor of their achievements in providing arts learning opportunities to children and youth in Kansas.

940 Dance Company awarded residency

The 940 Dance Company, the Lawrence Arts Center’s professional, touring dance company, has been selected to be a part of the Studio Residency Program by the Charlotte Street Foundation. The dance company was awarded studio space at City Center Square in downtown Kansas City, where they will rehearse one day a week.

Quality Hill Playhouse enters its 15th year of producing cabaret entertainment in downtown Kansas City with a season dedicated to talented lyricists. "Say It With Music: The American Lyricist Series" honors songwriting legends Sammy Cahn, Johnny Mercer, Yip Harburg and Cole Porter, men who penned the words to some of the best songs in the American Songbook. In addition to these original cabaret revues, the season includes a musical revue written by Broadway songwriters Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire.

The next couple of weeks offer some great chances to get into the mood for the new season - the Performing Arts Series at JCCC presents the always charming Takacs String Quartet, and the KC Symphony's music director Michael Stern makes his first appearance of the season, but not at the helm of the Kansas City Symphony, but rather leading the forces of the Conservatory Orchestra of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. Speaking of dance, the young Ailey II ensemble of the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey opens their season this month at the Folly Theater. And if contemporary music is your thing, the new music ensemble newEar opens its concert season with the music of Takemitsu and others. Enjoy!
